Books to Read

< Back to the index

I'm always stumped on buying books, honestly. Even as my "I guess I should be reading if I want to write better" turns into an earnest curiosity for fiction, I'm still completely lost on authors I like or how to start digging for them. Caby's deal is to read the first couple pages and go for what she likes from there, which is a good way to do it, provided you're not making your girlfriend wait wandering around a bookstore.

A couple books we bought on the trip

Anyway, I figured I should start somewhere that isn't a band biography or a technical book, so how about Douglas Adams? If I like what I see—well, everyone tries to copy him, so maybe it doesn't help me, but it is a classic. I also took home Badgerlands, which explores why badgers are so elusive and disdained in the UK (ask Jeremy Clarkson). Also, because I'm still me, Wales: 100 Records, a compendium of obviously 100 records made by the Welsh, music made in Wales, or music that's Wales-themed. You'd be surprised at some of the names that pop up. For such a small country that people tend to overlook, a lot of famous musicians come from Wales.

Also, Caby got a book on the works of Judith Kerr, a children's author and illustrator with a super distinctive style. I've personally never heard of The Tiger Who Came to Tea, but if you have (and Caby and her parents sure have!), that's her. Neato.
